Spring is now well and truly upon us, and we have had three well-attended and very different meetings so far this year.
We kicked off in February after a short winter break with our Annual General Meeting, followed that same afternoon by a very engaging talk by Richard Griffin LVO (Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order). Richard was the most excellent speaker, giving us a very interesting and informative talk about his duties and experiences as a former Royal Protection Officer to HM The Queen and HRH Prince Philip. His talk was very amusing too, and it made for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon!
Our March meeting was titled Swan Song, and the demonstration was made by area demonstrator, Lionel Clarke. Despite the rather dreadful weather, we were pleasantly surprised that so many turned out to join us. Thank you to everyone that came along! Lionel did an excellent job entertaining us with his interesting floral experiences over the years, and created some lovely work too.
April saw our members’ afternoon workshop, which took as its theme Easter Arrangements.
During the workshop, a design was demonstrated and then members created their own arrangement using materials they had brought with them, with assistance given by the experts on hand during the session. Members brought in their own containers and flowers and foliages, including some from their own gardens, as well as twigs and so on for creating structure, and any other suitable accessories for the Easter theme!
The Workshop proved to be a great success and the Hall soon filled with lovely designs full of colour. It was a pleasure to behold, and wonderful way to celebrate the coming of Spring!
It was also the day for the Dussek Trophy – with the very appropriate title of “An arrangement of Spring Flowers”! First prize was awarded to Gill Smaggasgale, with second and third prizes going to Karen Chuter and Margaret Rumsey respectively. A very well done to our winners and to all those who joined us for the workshop. Tessa Forbes presented the Trophy to Gill and thanks go to Pat Weedon and Muriel Fuller for producing some of the designs included in the raffle. As always the “Team” enabled a very enjoyable afternoon and thank you to them too.
