Our July meeting took place in perfect summer weather to really set the scene. Area Demonstrator Anna Stevens travelled from Oxford to join us for a demonstration entitled “Do you see what I see?”
Anna’s background is in art, which was immediately evident from the choice of colours and textures for her arrangements. She also puts great thought into the containers she uses, and explained that she makes many of them herself.
Anna’s demonstration was inspiring and full of great tips. The fresh and colourful displays really brightened the hall and the huge pink lilies were particularly stunning.
She showed us how to use test tubes with small flowers to make a larger arrangement that could then be disassembled and used in another design: a really clever idea. Another of her designs used wire to support the flowers, which makes a wonderful alternative to foam.
Anna is currently a guide a the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, and it was wonderful to hear her stories about the museum and the Oxford Colleges, too.
Many thanks to Anna for joining us, we all left the demonstration feeling inspired and infused with the colours of summer!
We don’t have a meeting in August, although we hope many of you will attend the National Competitions in London for some more inspiration. The event runs from Wednesday 7th August until Saturday 11th August at the Business Design Centre in Islington. You can find out all the details here: NAFAS National Competitions 2019
Our next club meeting is on Tuesday 10 September: Singalong with Angela Turner. Angela is a six-times Chelsea Gold Medal winner no less! In 2018 she was the Creative Director of the Flower Festival in Winchester Cathedral, creating an amazing display. We can’t wait to see what Angela has planned for her demonstration. We hope you can join us.
One more date for your diary if we may: the “Festival of Flowers” at Leeds Castle runs from the 14th to 19th September. This is a wonderful event, with incredible floral displays inside the Castle. The Kent Area of NAFAS will be decorating the Queen’s Bathroom in celebration of its Diamond Anniversary, which is a wonderful opportunity to take inspiration from award-winning floral designers! If you would like to come along, you can find all the information you need at the Leeds Castle website: Leeds Castle Festival of Flowers.
